Log Flume Day was Saturday the 2th of April

Again Last night we had no Cell phone or other services. We also had very little sleep but I am not going to talk about those noisy campers.

Saturday morning was great! Jean, Scott’s awesome Mom, brought our bags ahead to Lost Maples Natural Area in Texas. We started our morning off with a climb, and I do mean climb. These were not the steepest hills we have tackled, but there were 3 of them. I like to call this day “Log Flume Day”. This is because when you climb the mountain (steep hill) it reminded me of the slow click clack of the “Log” being pulled up the hill. Once you get to the top of the mountain there is that brief pause and than… Wheeee…… Down the mountain you go, or the fun splash at the end of the log flume ride.  Also comparative to the ride is the time difference it takes almost 4X as long to climb the hill as it takes to go down it. For example our average speed going up the hill was 6-7 mph and Scott clocked himself at 29 mph on the down and I was close to 40(I know this because I flew by Scott on that down).

Also 334 is a drivers paradise. Apparently cars and motorcycles from all around come to this part of Texas just to drive that section of road. Scott and I saw a line of 7 or more BMW drive by us not to mention the fancy tricked out cars and bikes. We actually had our picture taken by a professional photographer, who photographs the bikes as they go by and than meets up with them in Leaky to show their work and, (of course) offer to sell the guys their pictures. The guy we talked to was Daryl and he was a really nice photographer for txmotofoto.com.

Scott and I also had an opportunity to chat with some of the motorcyclists. I think they think we are crazy, but as Scott says we have a lot in common with them. Thing one is we like to ride a machine with two wheels. Thing two we like the wind in our hair and the feel of the open road. I don’t know the exact quote from Scott but it was something like that.

At the end of our “Log Flume” ride we made it to Lost Maples. The customer service lady seemed a little mean, but that could be because they never had cross-country cyclist stay in one of their wilderness campsites before. It was a beautiful spot the small stream that runs through the nature area collected into a small pond at our camp site. The mile walk in pushing our, now, fully load bikes was slightly difficult but the reward seemed well worth it. Scott and I both jumped in to the pond since it was in the upper 90s the other day and we were so hot. Scott lasted about half a minute I swam around for a good 15 minutes or so because it felt so good to cool off. After that we set up tent and planned to go to bed at a decent hour. Let me just finish by saying last night didn’t go as planned. I was kept awake until past midnight by a really loud group, planning on teaching  “wilderness etiquette” to campers the next day. Needless to say this made biking our 54 miles to Kerrvile a nightmare for Scott since I didn’t get my beauty sleep, but we are here now and taking a zero day tomorrow, so I’ll be rested and awesome again before I know it.
