Subtitle: Biking a tightrope, or: More adventures in off route biking.
We were up early today after not much sleep last night. Thankfully there was no rain last night or this morning, so we woke up dry. With the choice of over 80 miles to Natchez via the Adventure Cycling Route, or 60 miles via main roads, we decided that 80 miles was not happening today. So, we rerouted and took our own route to Natchez. Interesting notes: Morris Road is not paved, but rather a mix of gravel and packed clay.
The creek that it crosses does have a bridge, but there is a sign before it that says “One Lane Bridge Ahead”
and another sign that says “Cross at Own Risk”. We did cross, but since the bridge was collapsed into the creek, we really thought of it more as a dam then a bridge.
The ride on highway 61 was very intense. The shoulder was about 12” wide for most of the way, with a drop to gravel shoulder on the right and rumble strips on the left. I don’t know if you’ve ever ridden on rumble strips with a bike before, but it is very hard on everything from the bike to your body. We made it into Natchez and stopped at the first motel we came to, and are preparing to start the trace we’ve been hearing so much about! Will continue to hope that we stay away from all of the severe weather and flood warnings we keep reading about for the area.
