St. Francisville Louisiana

Yesterday after Dave dropped us off we booked into the 3V Tourist Court.  It’s one of the oldest continuously operating tourist courts, and we are staying in one of the rooms that’s on the National Register of Historic Places and has been operating since the 1930s. It’s an interesting set up with each room being an independent building with it’s own covered parking area. The rooms are nice, quiet and clean with great showers.

I took the afternoon and rode down to the river and crossed over to the west side of the Mississippi River and back again via the St. Francisville Ferry.  It was an awesome experience to take the ferry across such a huge river.  And, I was glad to get a ride in since they are currently in the process of building a bridge just south of St. Francisville that will start by supplementing the ferry, and eventually replace it.  That will be a sad day for St. Francisville, since right now most of their traffic through the historic downtown comes from the ferry landing rather than the highway outside of town. It was also cute to see kids out selling lemon-aid and water to motorists waiting for the ferry, which leaves each side every half hour.

The downtown was really cool with almost every building, even the private houses, labeled with a sign in front dating it and giving a short history of it. The churches and graveyards  were absolutely beautiful too, with old Live Oaks covered with Spanish Moss all around.

Today I took a short ride to the historic Rosedown Plantation just west of town. The house and out buildings are in good shape, and the furnishings were very beautiful.  I also went to the historical museum, which was interesting in explaining the history. The Birdman Café we went to for breakfast normally has live music combined with a Scrabble night on Mondays, but since it’s the day after Easter they were unfortunately on a reduced menu with neither live music nor Scrabble. And now, after a packed zero day, we will do laundry at the tourist court and get some sleep before we start riding tomorrow.
