We are in the town of Donaldsonville LA today a total of 72 miles off our route. We are very excited to see my friend Dave and to have a few days of rest.
Last night was interesting, both Scott and I didn’t sleep very well. The campsites or RV parks here that are privately owned in LA have bars attached to them. This is a very useful for when people stumble out of the bar they can set up a tent and therefore not drink and drive. Useful to the bar patrons, however, un-useful to the cross-country cyclist who is having difficulty sleeping because of bar fights. Yes, that is right; there must have been five bar-fights last night. They were all verbal, but wow, were they loud. So this morning Scott and I got up on about 2 hours of sleep total and rode 72 miles to an Inn so that we can get one night of good sleep (hopefully).
We took LA route 1 south to Donaldsonville, which had a very terrifying moment in it. We had to cross under Interstate 10. Route 1 under 10 lost the shoulder and after you went under 10 two different roads joined with 1. Right after the other two roads joined route 1 goes up over a bridge with zero shoulder. It was absolutely terrifying. I would have taken a picture, but unfortunately I think some drivers would have been okay with involuntary manslaughter. After we got past the interstate the road regained it’s shoulder and was relatively easy riding. After we got our room, showered, laundry, and changed (clean cloths yea) we went to dinner. Dinner was good, but the funny thing that happened on our way back from dinner. We stopped in the gas station for some ice cream and went we were checking out the casher asked if I rode my bike a lot. I was wondering why she would ask that and than she pointed out my chin tan line. I think after this trip I am going to try and make biker tan lines all the rave.
