Today we left the Comstock Motel and headed out on the road again. We had a pretty good zero day yesterday, but as with all zero days it didn’t seem long enough. Yesterday we updated, wrote post cards, let Audrey’s cut heal a little in a good environment, enjoyed the café across the street, washed cloths, washed food containers, cleaned my knife, and in general got reorganized and cleaned.
This morning was cool and cloudy with a light tailwind, and wow did it go fast! We did the 30 miles into Del Rio very quickly, and then ran errands. On the ride we crossed over a bridge on the Amistad Reservoir. Long, and with no shoulders, it was kind of scary, but it wasn’t high like the Pecos River bridge, and it had a decently high guardrail so we could ride across instead of having to walk the bikes.
In Del Rio, we stopped at Wal-Mart to get band-aids large enough for Audrey’s cut, and then did grocery shopping for the next couple of days. We then stopped at Lakeside Sports Bicycle Shop where we got some more spare spokes, had Audrey’s wheel trued, and picked up fuel for our stove. A really nice guy there in the shop and we talked for awhile with a West-Bound Biker.
Despite how early we finished our miles, by the time we had gotten the band-aids, groceries, and gotten the bike taken care of, we were ready to stop for the night and make mac and cheese for dinner. So we headed over to the Elks Campground in Del Rio. We go here early, and had cooked and set up camp, when we were met by an awesome guy named Matt who showed us around, gave us a better camping spot, and told us to come in later and meet everybody and have some pizza. So we moved the campsite, got our plan together for the next couple of days, and are updating while waiting for it to be late enough to go in and introduce ourselves.
Tomorrow we intend to head to Brackettville, and have my mom meet us there. Then we’ll have her slack pack us to Camp Wood the following day. Then we will probably have her drop our bags at Lost Maples State Natural Area as she leaves on Saturday, so that we can do the crazy hill country of Texas without packs. Here’s to a plan! 🙂
